Adorable Edisto retreat

Summer Camp was exactly what we look for in a beach house: cosy, calm, gently aged and perfectly equipped. Just a short two blocks to the beach. We were greeted with a friendly welcome note and suggestions rather than the military-style instructions issued by some of the other Edisto rental agencies. Great thought had obviously been put into providing spares of everything you might need: shampoo, hand soap, tissues, coffee supplies, spices, first aid kit, beach chairs, cart, umbrellas, etc. Kitchen equipment included a toaster, coffeemaker, slow cooker, blender and lots of dishes, plastic glasses, etc; anything you might need whether you eat in or go out. We enjoyed sitting out on the screened porch surrounded by cafe lights and live oaks when the weather was warmer, and in the many armchairs and nooks inside when it got chilly. Deer wandered past every evening. Heating worked great, and shower had good pressure and lots of hot water. Especially loved the comfy and cosy day bed area for reading and chatting. It's a smaller house which feels much larger than it is because of the clever layout and use of space. Everything was spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated, in an understated and authentic way that didn't scream interior designer on a seashore binge. Mattresses felt new and comfortable, and bedding was pristine. General info: We've been to Edisto a few times before, so knew to stop at King's Farmers Market on the way in for seafood casserole and key lime pie, Food Lion for general provisions, and the ABC Package Store for libations. In the past we've loved visiting Botany Bay, Edisto State Park and the Serpentarium. This time our highlights were a peaceful wander around Roxbury Park (about 30 minutes away in Meggett), and watching the sea from the pier at Coot's with a beer. Restaurants on Edisto are what you would expect for a somewhat remote beach town in October, so enjoy eating outside when possible and manage your expectations. We had mediocre food at Waterfront and High Tides, brusque service at the Sea Cow, but a pleasant breakfast at the Marsh Moon Cafe. Usually enjoy sitting on the deck at Dockside Bar, but it wasn't open at this time of year. Note there is no dishwasher, and only a shower in the bathroom. Worked fine for us. The outdoor shower was great for hosing off the dog, who had a fabulous time! Fortunately we'd remembered to purchase a long extendable leash as dogs must be leashed on the beach over the summer until October 31. The house is on the street leading to the recycling center, so occasional recycling and fire trucks roll by, which would probably delight youngsters.
